Omelets remind me of when I was a little kid at daycare. I had the best daycare in the world and my sister and I would get there super early and they would already have breakfast ready for the kids.

One thing they would make us a lot were omelets. It was just a plain omelet with nothing inside but I thought they were so good.

Omelets are awesome because they can be stuffed with many different ingredients but my favorite is cheese because cheese makes everything better right?

I can’t wait to show you all how I make mine. I know you may be thinking “who needs to be shown how to make an omelet they’re so easy?”

Well years ago I used to always burn mine or it would always fall apart when trying to close it so I want to share some tips and show how simple it truly is.

Ingredients needed

This recipe is made from simple staple ingredients that you most likely already have on hand. They include:

  • Eggs
  • Butter
  • Shredded cheese
  • Salt
  • Black pepper

How to make a cheese omelet step by step

Crack two eggs in a bowl. Season with a little salt and pepper and beat with a fork for a minute or two.

two eggs whisked in a bowl

After beating the eggs heat up one tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium high heat.

Make sure the butter coats the entire surface of the skillet.

one tablespoon of butter melting in a skillet.

Once the butter is totally melted and sizzling add the eggs to the skillet.

Tilt the skillet slightly all around so that the runny eggs in the middle run toward the edge of the skillet.

This is going to help the omelet cook faster.

Let the eggs cook for about 40 seconds or until it’s mostly set.

Once most of the omelet has set and there’s very little runny egg left on top go ahead and add your choice of shredded cheese to one side of the omelet.

After adding the cheese close the omelet. Do this by using a spatula to gently lift up the side of the omelet without cheese and flipping it closed.

It’s ok if there is still a tiny bit of wet eggs left on top just before folding it. The residual heat will continue to cook it.

Transfer the omelet to a plate and enjoy! I like to season with a little more salt and pepper.

What type of cheese is best for an omelet?

Any kind of cheese that melts easily can be used. I prefer cheddar for mine. Cheddar jack, Monterrey jack or even pepper jack also work.

You can grate your own cheese or you can buy the cheese already shredded. I prefer to use the bagged shredded stuff as it’s less work for me.

How to Make an Omelet Tips

  • Stick to one or two eggs for your omelet if you’re a beginner.
  • After the eggs hit the pan the whole cooking process should take about a minute.
  • Don’t wait until the top of the omelet is completely dry before folding. This will dry the omelet out and possibly burn it.
  • Garnish your omelet with green onions if you have them. The green onions add flavor and look pretty.
