I adore French toast. Not only is it delicious but it’s also so easy to make.
We usually have oatmeal for breakfast so for me this is a way to change up or breakfast routine and surprise my kids as they love French toast.
What I really appreciate about this recipe is that it isn’t too eggy. I can’t stand when French toast has an overpowering eggy flavor.
This recipe uses just two eggs so for me it’s perfect!
Can you use white sandwich bread for French toast?
Absolutely! There’s no need to go out and buy fancy bread for this recipe when sandwich bread works just fine.
I actually prefer to use white sandwich bread as that is how I remember it growing up.
We also like to use white sandwich bread for stuffing!
What ingredients do I need to make French toast?
Like I said before, this recipe is incredibly simple. It consists of just 8 basic ingredients that you most likely already have on hand. They include:
- eggs
- half and half
- sugar
- salt
- ground cinnamon
- vanilla extract
- bread
- butter
How to make it
Crack the eggs into a mixing bowl and add the half and half, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt. Beat the mixture with a fork until everything is well mixed.

Heat up a tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat.

Once the butter is sizzling, take one slice of bread and dip it in the egg mixture on both sides. You’ll want to do this quickly as the bread can easily fall apart if it absorbs too much of the egg mixture.
Then place it in the skillet.
if your skillet is big enough you can cook two slices at a time.

Cook it for about a minute then flip it and cook for about another minute.

Then transfer to a plate and repeat the above steps until the egg mixture is gone. Add more butter as needed to the skillet.
This recipe will make about 8 slices of french toast.

See how incredibly easy it is? All you need are some basic ingredients and a little time and you’ll have an amazing breakfast whipped up in no time!
Can I use milk instead of half & half?
Yes! I like to use half and half as it’s just a bit more fancy than milk haha. However, if you only have milk on hand that will work just as well.
How to serve French toast
Serve it with jelly, syrup or even powdered sugar.
It’s also good with fresh berries or chopped nuts for some added texture.
French toast tips and tricks
- Add a pinch of nutmeg to the egg mixture for extra flavor.
- When dipping the bread into the egg mixture do it quickly as sandwich bread is soft and can easily fall apart.
