Agua de Tamarindo (Tamarind Agua Fresca)

Agua de tamarindo is an easy and delicious beverage you must try! It’s very refreshing and it’s something the whole family will enjoy. If you enjoy this drink, you’ll have to try my cantaloupe agua fresca next!

agua de tamarindo is an agua fresca that is popular in Mexico. It is made from the tamarind fruit. Try it this cinco de mayo!

What does tamarind flavor taste like?

The tamarind fruit has a very unique sweet and sour taste. In beverage form it’s super yummy!

Tamarind is popular throughout Mexico and in parts of Asia.

You might have had tamarind before in a soda or in candy. In fact Mexican candy is how I was first introduced to tamarind.

Have you ever tried Pulparindo? It’s one of my favorite candies made with tamarind.

You should try it! It’s hot and salty… very different from our American candies but really really good!

You can also enjoy the tamarind fruit as it is. You don’t have to make it into a candy or drink.

When I make agua de tamarindo I always make sure to buy extra tamarind pods just so I can snack on them.

You have to crack open the pod and peel off the veins first.

After opening you will see that the fruit has lumps in it. The lumps are where the seeds are.

What I do is take a bite and suck on it for a few minutes until all the fruit is gone. Then I just spit out the seeds.

I think this is the easiest way to eat it and your hands don’t get all sticky afterwards.

When my husband was a kid he had the pleasure of having a tamarind tree in his backyard! So he could enjoy this delicious fruit whenever he wanted and for free!

How to make Agua de tamarindo

Agua de tamarindo is really simple to make like most agua frescas. After cracking them open and peeling off the veins the fruit will need to be simmered for half an hour.

This will soften up the fruit and make it easy to remove the seeds. I remove the seeds with my hands because I’ve found that it’s the fastest method.

After that it’s strained into a pitcher with water and sugar and then it’s ready to be served over ice.

If you don’t like how strong it is you can always add more water but I like it a little strong since the ice waters it down a bit.

Where can I find tamarind fruit?

You’ll have the best luck finding tamarind pods at a Mexican grocery store. So check to see if you have one nearby in your area.
