Horchata de fresa is a type of agua Fresca. Aguas frescas are refreshing beverages that very popular in Mexico.

They are usually made from fruits but can also be made with grains, seeds and even flowers.

What is strawberry horchata made of?

Today’s agua fresca is made from strawberries, rice, milk, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla.

It pretty much combines two of my favorite drinks which are agua de fresa and agua de horchata.

How to make strawberry horchata

Just like regular horchata this strawberry and rice version starts with soaking rice and cinnamon in water overnight or for at least 4 hours.

I break up the cinnamon stick first and I use long grain white rice.

soaked rice and cinnamon

Transfer the rice, cinnamon and soaking water to a blender and blend for about 2 minutes.

Strain the mixture into a pitcher.

chopped strawberries

Take washed, hulled and chopped strawberries and add them to the blender with water, condensed milk and sugar. Blend this mixture until smooth.

Then strain into the pitcher and give it a stir.

Now it’s time to add the evaporated milk, more water and vanilla. Then stir once more. That’s it.

Super easy and delicious! Now just serve over lots of ice.

This drink will stay good in the refrigerator for 3 days.

What kind of rice should I use for horchata de fresa?

For the most authentic taste use long grain white rice.

Do I have to use evaporated milk?

No. However, I really like using evaporated milk because it gives the horchata a creamier taste.

You can use regular milk if that’s all you have. Or you can even omit it entirely and substitute with extra water.

Do I have to use condensed milk?

No. I like to use condensed milk for the same reason I like evaporated milk, the creamy taste.

However if you don’t have condensed milk you can use extra sugar to sweeten your horchata.

Horchata de fresa (strawberry horchata)

The great thing about this horchata with strawberries recipe is it’s very adaptable.

It doesn’t have to be strictly made with evaporated and condensed milk. Use what you have!

I personally love using what I have in my kitchen and not having to buy more ingredients.

It’s fun to experiment in the kitchen and see what you like!

I hope you like this strawberry version of horchata as much as I do!
