Having a blended Mexican/American family, tacos are something we have on a regular basis. Some of our favorite fillings for tacos include shrimp, tuna, chicken and potato.

This particular recipe that I’m sharing today has become one of my new favorite recipes. It’s inexpensive and doesn’t take me long to make at all.

It can make anywhere from 15 to 20 tacos total. I really wanted to stretch the ground beef so I made 20 tacos and it was the perfect amount to fill the bellies of my two oldest children plus my husband and I.

How do you fry ground beef for tacos?

In most taco recipes the ground beef is cooked before adding it to the taco shells.

However, with this recipe the ground beef is added to the softened tortilla while still raw, then it is fried.

This method makes fixing beef tacos for your family super easy.

Ingredients needed

You can add your choice of seasonings to the ground beef, this is just how I personally like to season mine. You could even season it with store bought taco seasoning or homemade if you prefer.

  • ground beef
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • ground cumin
  • cayenne pepper
  • Mexican oregano
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • dried chives
  • corn tortillas
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • chopped roma tomatoes
  • diced white onion
  • shredded lettuce
  • Mexican blend shredded cheese
  • sour cream (optional)
  • hot sauce (optional)

How do you make homemade fried tacos?

The first thing we’re going to do is season the meat. Put the ground beef in a large bowl and add the garlic powder, onion powder, ground cumin, cayenne pepper, Mexican oregano, salt, black pepper and dried chives.

Mix everything together very well with your hand.

Warm up the tortillas in the microwave until pliable. Then, take one tortilla and place a large spoonful of the meat mixture on one side of the tortilla.

Use your hand to spread the raw ground beef into a thin layer that covers half of the tortilla as shown below. Fold the taco closed and set aside.

Repeat the above step with the rest of tortillas and ground beef.

I like to do the above step on a large baking sheet so that there is enough room for all of the uncooked tacos.

In total, I made 20 tacos. If you’d like a little more meat in your tacos you can do 15 tacos instead of 20. I do not recommend making less than 15.

The reason why this taco recipe works and can be cooked from raw is because the ground beef is spread into a thin layer which allows it cook quickly.

These tacos are a favorite in my house. My kids are obsessed with them.

They like them better than the fast food restaurant tacos which is great because making them myself turns out to be cheaper.

Why you’ll love this fried taco recipe

This easy taco recipe is super yummy and inexpensive. It can easily feed a large family especially when served with sides.

You can easily adapt this recipe by what you already have in your kitchen. For example, you can change up the seasonings to your liking.

You don’t have to use all the seasonings I listed. If all you want is salt, pepper and garlic powder then that’s perfectly fine.

Another reason you’ll love these fried ground beef tacos is because they cook so quickly. It really is the perfect recipe for busy moms looking for something easy they can feed their family.

Also, since this recipe doesn’t require you to cook the ground beef before filling the tortilla shells, this means there are fewer dishes dirtied up. This is probably my favorite thing about this recipe!

What sides can I serve with crispy beef tacos?

These tacos are good served with or without sides. If you have a large family and are looking to stretch this economical meal even further I suggest pairing it with some Mexican red spaghetti or fideo seco.

Can I reheat them?

Crispy beef tacos are best consumed soon after frying. However, if you do end up with leftovers you can reheat them in the oven at 350. Bake them for about 5-7 minutes or until warmed through.

I don’t recommend reheating them in the microwave as they will turn soggy.
