Tacos de Atún (Tuna Tacos)

Tacos de atún or tuna tacos are an excellent way to use up that canned tuna you have in your kitchen cabinets. These tuna tacos are inexpensive, easy, and so delicious!

These tacos de atún are something I started making one day when I was running out of options of what to make for dinner and I really didn’t feel like going to the store.

I was looking in my fridge and cabinets and saw tortillas and three cans of tuna. So tuna tacos it was!

Tuna tacos ingredient list

  • 3 cans tuna (drained)
  • 2 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1/4 onion (diced)
  • 2 tbs oil (plus more for frying)
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 chipotles in adobo (chopped)
  • 1 tbs mayonnaise
  • 2 tbs lime juice
  • 8 corn tortillas
  • cilantro

How to make tacos de atún

The first thing is to make the actual taco shells. This is super easy and you can find the instructions here.

Now it’s time to start on the tuna filling.

Heat up the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Then add the onion and garlic and saute for a few minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Then add the chipotles and the drained tuna and cook for a few more minutes.

Remove from heat and add the mayo and a few tablespoons of chopped cilantro. Then add the lime juice and stir well.

Spoon the tuna filling into the taco shells.

You can serve these delicious tuna tacos alongside some fideo seco or espagueti rojo. It’ll be a really easy, simple yet yummy meal.

I garnished my tacos with some shredded lettuce and guacamole. It was so good!

These tacos de atún are a great dinner option when you don’t have much time to throw dinner together. They come together very fast. You can also control the level of heat by adding more or less chipotles.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz canned tuna drained
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 onion diced
  • 2 tbs oil plus more for frying taco shells
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper ground
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 chipotles in adobo chopped
  • 1 tbs mayonnaise
  • 2 tbs lime juice
  • 3 tbs cilantro chopped
  • 8 corn tortillas

Instructions

  1. Make the taco shells and set aside.

  2. Heat up the 2 tablespoons of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Once hot add the onion and garlic. Saute for a few minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

  3. And the chopped chipotles and the drained tuna. Stir and cook for a few more minutes.

  4. Remove from heat and add the mayo, cilantro and lime juice. Stir well.

  5. Spoon the tuna filling into the tacos shells and serve.
