Lately I’ve been all about cheap and easy meals. Grocery shopping for a large family can get expensive fast!
And trying to cook fancy meals when you have a 1 year old is pretty difficult. So I try to keep it simple these days.
But cheap and easy doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice flavor.
This fried cabbage and smoked sausage recipe is loaded with flavor!
Ingredients needed
This recipe is incredibly simple and only includes 6 ingredients. You probably already have most of them on hand. They include:
- cabbage
- smoked sausage
- yellow onion
- salt
- black pepper
- olive oil
How to cook fried cabbage and smoked sausage
Cut the cabbage then rinse it well in a colander and set aside. If you’re wondering how to cut it you need to check out this great post on how to cut cabbage.

Next cut the sausage into slices and dice the onion.

Heat up a large skillet over medium heat. Add half of the smoked sausage in a single layer.
I like to cook my sausage in two batches that way the skillet isn’t crowded. This allows for the sausage to get nicely browned instead of steamed.
Cook the sausage on each side for about 2-3 minutes or until browned. Then transfer them to a paper towel lined plate to drain.
Then repeat the above steps with the remaining half of sausage.

This is how brown I like my sausage to get. It gives it a really good flavor.

Next add the olive oil to the skillet. Once hot add the diced onion. Season with salt and pepper and cook for a few minutes.

Next add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. Stir well and season with more salt and black pepper.
Cover the skillet and reduce heat to medium low. Let the cabbage cook for about 20 minutes or until tender.

Now add the smoked sausage to the cabbage. Toss with tongs to combine.
This dish is now ready to be served.

What to serve with fried cabbage and sausage?
This recipe can be served as is. That is how we enjoy it.
However if you want to make it more of a meal then I would suggest serving it with a side of pinto beans and cornbread.
Do you have to wash cabbage?
Yes! Bugs can be inside the leaves so I always rinse my cabbage very well in a colander.
Can you reheat fried cabbage and sausage?
Yes, this dish tastes just as good if not better the second day. Just reheat in the microwave until warm.
