Arepas con queso are seriously one of the most delicious and comforting foods ever! The best part is they’re incredibly easy to make. These slightly crunchy corn patties are oozing with delicious mozzarella cheese. It’s something the whole family will love!
So I think by now everyone has seen the movie Encanto, right?
I think we’ve seen it about 10 times!
My kids love it! And so I do I. Especially the music!
But you’re probably wondering what an arepa con queso is.
As they do get brought up in the movie a few times.
Arepas are delicious corn patties that can be opened and stuffed with pretty much anything you desire.
So an arepa con queso is an arepa with cheese. Since cheese translates to queso in spanish.
In this case the cheese is mixed right into the arepa dough.
This actually makes things so much easier because we won’t have to slice open the arepas after cooking since the cheese is already mixed in.
If you read my blog regularly you already know that I love all things that have to do with arepas, pupusas and gorditas!
The three are pretty similar but yet different. Read about them here.
What do I need to make arepas con queso
You don’t need a lot to make cheese arepas. They’re pretty simple but so delicious.
Here are the ingredients you will need:
- precooked cornmeal
- water
- salt
- sugar
- shredded mozzarella cheese
Here is the brand of precooked cornmeal I use. It’s called P.A.N.
Cheese Arepas Recipe Steps
Start my measuring 2 cups of precooked corn meal.
Pour the cornmeal into a bowl.
Pour 2 1/2 cups of water into a separate bowl.
Add 1 tsp of salt and 1 tsp of sugar to the water. Stir well.
Slowly pour the cornmeal into the water while mixing with your hand.
Mix well.
Then add 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese.
Continue mixing with your hand until the cheese is well incorporated into the dough.
Let the dough rest for a few minutes.
Then divide into 10 equal sized balls.
You can make them bigger therefore making less dough balls.
It all depends on how big you want your arepas.
Heat up a skillet over medium heat. Add just enough oil to coat the skillet.
While waiting for the skillet to get hot flatten one of the arepa balls with your palms.
Then place in the skillet. If your skillet is big enough add another one.
Cook for about 4 minutes.
Then flip and cook for another 4 min.
Transfer the cooked arepas con queso to a paper towel lined plate.
Then repeat the above steps with the remaining arepa balls.
What to serve with arepas de queso?
For a delicious Colombian breakfast serve these arepas with huevos pericos.
I like to make these cheese arepas as an afternoon snack and serve them with this refreshing Colombian coconut limeade (limonada de coco).
