Ingredients
To make this oat milk smoothie, we will need a few basic ingredients – bananas, oat milk, peanut butter, hemp seeds, chia seeds and ice.
Banana
The perfect kind of banana for this smoothie is a ripe (or overripe) one. The level of natural sweetness the banana will lend to the smoothie will depend on its ripeness. Additionally, you can also use a natural sweetener like agave if you like your smoothie on the sweet side.
Oat milk
Oat milk is a vegan, non-dairy and plant based milk. It adds a creamy consistency to blended beverages.
Peanut butter
Peanut butter lends a nutty creaminess to the smoothie. Any kind of creamy peanut butter works for this recipe. Feel free to use an all natural, unsweetened variety.
Hemp seeds
Adding hemp seeds into our smoothie lends a nutty versatility to the taste.
Chia seeds
Mixing chia seeds into our smoothies gives it a mild nutty flavor and thicker texture.
How do you make oat milk?
If you prefer to make your own oat milk then you’re in luck! It’s easy to make oat milk at home. Here’s a basic recipe:
- Blend 1 cup (approximately 80 grams) of rolled oats (or steel cut variety) with 3 cups of cold water for 20-30 seconds.
- Place cheesecloth over a pitcher or large mason jar.
- Pour the mixture over the cheesecloth to separate the milk from the oats.
- Lift the cloth from the ends to form a sac, and squeeze remaining liquid into the container. Make sure not to squeeze too tightly. And there you go, homemade oat milk. No soaking required! It may not be as nutritious as store bought ones but there you can ensure freshness and quality. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days.
