Today I’m going to show you how to make delicious black beans. They’re so easy and inexpensive and they go great as a side to many different dishes. This recipe is basically the same as my recipe for mashed frijoles pintos but with black beans instead of pintos.
Ingredients needed
- Black beans
- White onion
- Garlic cloves
- Bay leaves
- Water
- Chicken bouillon
- Salt
If I have it on hand I also like to add jalapeño. It adds a great flavor to the beans without making them spicy.
Once the beans are finished cooking I like to mash them to thicken the broth and give it a smooth conistency. However this is not necessary it’s just the way I like to prepare my beans.
What to serve them with?
I often serve these beans with scrambled eggs in the morning but they go great with so many other dishes such as:
- Tamales de rajas con queso
- Steak a la Mexicana
- Mexican style shrimp
- Pollo a la Mexicana
- Mexican style potatoes
How to Make Black Beans
Ingredients
- 2 cups black beans rinsed
- 1/2 white onion
- 4 garlic cloves peeled
- 2 bay leaves
- 8 cups water
- 2 tbs chicken bouillon
- salt to taste
Instructions
-
Put the rinsed beans, onion, garlic cloves and bay leaves in a pot. Add 8 cups of water to the pot and bring to a boil.
-
Once the water starts to boil, reduce the heat to low and cover. Cook for 1 hour.
-
Next add the chicken bouillon to the pot and continue to cook covered for another hour or until the beans are tender.
-
Remove the lid and remove the onion, garlic and bay leaves from the pot and discard.
-
Turn the heat to medium and start mashing the beans with a potato masher. Continue to cook the beans for about 10 min or until they reach your desired consistency.
-
You can add salt to taste or you can add more chicken bouillon if you prefer.
-
Serve and enjoy!
