What is coconut flan made of?

This coconut cream cheese flan is made of sugar, sweetened condensed milk, cream cheese, eggs, coconut milk and Mexican vanilla.

This recipe uses just a few eggs as I’m not a fan of a super eggy flan.

While a flan de coco y queso might sound complicated it’s actually pretty simple.

How to make flan de coco y queso

The first thing you need to do is make the caramel sauce.

Add sugar to a pan and heat over medium heat.

Make sure the sugar is spread out evenly in the pan.

After about 7 minutes you will see the sugar begin to melt.

Slowly stir it with a wooden spoon until all of the sugar has melted.

making caramel sauce

Pour the caramel sauce into a pie dish.

The caramel sauce hardens quickly so you’ll have to be quick.

But be very careful as it is extremely hot!

Now preheat the oven to 350.

Next put the rest of the ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth.

Then pour the blended mixture into the pie dish.

Flan needs to be baked in a water bath.

This is easy to do.

Cover the pie dish with foil.

Place the pie dish in a large roasting pan.

Fill the pan with water until it reaches about half way up the pie dish.

Place the roasting pan in the oven and bake for about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

covered flan

Remove the flan from the oven. Remove the pie dish from the roasting pan VERY Carefully using kitchen mittens.

After coming out of the oven the flan should be slightly jiggly. It shouldn’t be completely set.

Pierce it with a fork. The fork should come out clean.

The flan will continue to set as it cools.

Let it cool for about an hour.

Then transfer it to the fridge to chill overnight or for at least 6 hours.

flan after baking

Now you’re ready to serve the flan.

Take a large plate and place it face down on top of the pie dish.

Then flip it and let it sit for about a minute as shown below.

Then lift up the pie dish.

Cut and serve the flan.

I like to garnish the flan with some shredded sweetened coconut but that’s optional.
