I grew up eating baked spaghetti as it was one of my moms favorite meals to make.
While her baked spaghetti is really good I made a small change that really kicked it up a notch.
The change I made was swapping out ground beef for sausage.
Italian sausage to be exact and it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to my baked spaghetti.
It took a good tasting dish to amazing with just a simple change!
This baked spaghetti recipe is easy, big on flavor and is a meal the entire family will love!
This delicious meal can be on the table in just a little over an hour.
That makes it the perfect weeknight meal for busy moms like myself!
I love foods with Italian flavors in them because I get to use a lot of the spices and seasonings that I have in my spice cabinet and pantry.
- Italian sausage
- San Marzano peeled tomatoes
- tomato sauce
- Worcestershire sauce
- green bell pepper
- yellow onion
- shredded mozzarella cheese
How to make baked spaghetti with sausage
Brown the sausage over medium high heat.
I like to get to the stage where it starts to caramelize a bit.
When that happens add the chopped bell pepper diced onion and continue to cook over medium heat until the veggies are slightly softened.
Now add the tomatoes, tomato sauce and Worcestershire sauce.
Use a spatula or wooden spoon to break up the tomatoes.
Bring it to a slight boil over medium heat then reduce heat to low and simmer for a bout 20 minutes to allow the flavors to come together.
While the sauce is simmering boil the spaghetti.
Boil it to just before al dente.
Since the spaghetti is going to bake in the oven we don’t want to overcook it and end up with mushy spaghetti.
Drain the spaghetti and add it to the sauce.
Then pour the spaghetti into a casserole dish.
Top with shredded mozzarella cheese.
Bake it in the oven at 350 for about 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
Let cool for a few minutes and cut into squares and serve!
What I liked best about this recipe is that my kids loved it!
It’s so important for me to make meals that my whole family likes and with two picky kids it can be hard.
So I’m definitely going to keep this recipe in rotation.
