Morita Salsa

Morita salsa in a bowl.

Morita salsa is a favorite in my house. It pairs perfectly with many foods such as eggs, tacos, tostadas, burritos and so much more! This salsa has a smoky flavor thanks to the morita chilies. Morita chilies are spicy so you can adjust this salsa to suit your preference. Reduce the amount of chilies to tame down the heat or you can add more if you like it extra spicy.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This salsa is simple to prepare using only six ingredients. Cooking the vegetables in a skillet gives the tomatoes and onion a lightly charred flavor, while briefly frying the morita chiles brings out their smoky taste.

Ingredients

  • Morita chilies
  • Garlic cloves
  • White onion
  • Rome tomatoes
  • Olive oil
  • Salt

How to Make Morita Salsa

Heat up the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the morita chilies and let them cook for about 10 to 15 minutes on each side. Make sure to keep an eye on them. If they burn they will make the salsa bitter.

Transfer the toasted chiles to a small pot filled with hot water. Let them soak while you cook the remaining ingredients. This will soften the chiles and make them easier to blend.

Add the garlic cloves and onion to the same skillet. Cook for approximately 5 minutes, stirring and turning them occasionally. The garlic should become golden, and the onion should soften and develop some lightly charred spots.

The garlic will usually finish cooking before the onion. Remove the garlic as soon as it is golden so it does not burn. Continue cooking the onion until it is softened and slightly charred. Set both aside.

Next add the tomatoes to the skillet and let cook for about 5 minutes per side until softened and a bit charred.

Drain the softened morita chiles and transfer them to a blender. Add the cooked garlic, onion, and tomatoes. Blend until the salsa reaches your desired consistency.

Pour the salsa into a bowl and stir in the salt. Taste and add additional salt if needed.

If desired you can add some diced onion to the salsa as well.

Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to enjoy.
