Can I mix orange juice with milk?
I know you may be thinking that mixing orange juice and milk would be a total disaster but it’s actually quite the opposite!
I got this recipe from a Dominican so this stuff is the real deal!
The trick is for the milk and orange juice to be cold otherwise when we mix them the milk will curdle.
What is morir sonañdo made of?
Besides milk and orange juice there are a few more ingredients involved.
These are the ingredients and measurements that we used.
You can play with them and adjust them to your liking.
Some people prefer theirs with more orange juice and some like theirs more milky.
- Juice of one lime
- 2 cups of fresh orange juice (chilled)
- 12 oz can of evaporated milk (chilled)
- 4 tbs of brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
What does it taste like?
Morir sonañdo is pure perfection. It taste like a sweet, smooth and creamy orange milkshake with a hint of vanilla.
It’s not thick like a milkshake though.
It’s thin but still creamy.
How to make morir sonañdo
Before you start making the drink I just want to reiterate the very important tip I shared earlier.
It’s very important for the milk and orange juice to be cold.
Otherwise when we mix them together the milk will curdle.
Therefore, I put the milk in a small pitcher and put it in the refrigerator for a few hours to chill.
I also kept the oranges in the fridge so when I juiced them the juice was already chilled.
Once the milk is very cold go ahead and juice enough oranges until you get two cups of orange juice.
I used 9 oranges in total.
I used a mesh strainer over a measuring cup to catch any seeds.
Go ahead and add the lime juice, 2 tbs of brown sugar and 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract to the orange juice and stir.
Take out the chilled milk and sweeten it with 2 tbs of brown sugar. Stir well.
Now slowly pour the orange juice mixture into the pitcher of milk while continuously stirring.
The drink is now ready to be served.
It should be consumed immediately.
It’s best served over ice.
Tips and tricks
There are many other ways to make this tasty Dominican drink.
If you don’t have fresh oranges you can always use store-bought orange juice.
Also instead of evaporated milk you can use whole milk.
However, I don’t recommend 2% milk because the end result won’t be as creamy.
Lastly, you can substitute the brown sugar for regular sugar or sweetened and condensed milk.
I’ve made morir sonañdo using these substitutions before and let me tell you it’s delicious no matter how you make it. Just make it!
And remember it’s best consumed immediately after making.
