Pollo empanizado translates to breaded chicken in English. Milanesa de pollo empanizada is a delicious and easy-to-prepare dish that is perfect for any occasion. This dish is made by breading chicken cutlets and frying them until they are golden brown and crispy.

Chicken cutlets are a favorite at my house because there’s so many ways to prepare them and they cook so quickly. We like to make thin sliced chicken breast with cajun seasoning. It’s so good!

Milanesa de pollo can be served with a variety of side dishes, but we think it is best served with a side of steamed veggies.

What country does milanesa de pollo come from?

Many countries have a dish similar to milanesa de pollo. It is thought to have originated in Italy or Spain, but it has become a popular dish in many countries around the world.

Despite its Italian roots, milanesa has become a popular dish in many Latin American countries. It is typically made with beef, but chicken and pork are also common ingredients. The dish is often served as a main course, but it can also be used as a sandwich filling.

What is pollo empanizado made of?

Pollo empanizado (milanesa de pollo) is made with thinly sliced seasoned chicken breasts. The chicken breasts are then coated in an egg mixture before being dredged in bread crumbs or in this case, crushed saltine cracker crumbs. The chicken is then fried until cooked through and golden brown.

There are many different recipes for chicken milanesa as each cook has their way of preparing this dish. For starters you can try making this dish yourself with my go-to ingredients which include:

  • 1 1/2 lb thinly sliced chicken breasts
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 3 eggs
  • saltine cracker
  • 1/2 cup canola oil

I recommend you experiment with the ratio of the seasonings in this recipe so that you can come up with something that suits your tastes.

How to make milanesa de pollo empanizada

I had about 1 1/2 lbs of chicken breasts that I cut into thin slices. This is similar to butterflying chicken except I cut all the way through the chicken breasts. I had two chicken breasts and was able to cut each breast into 3-4 slices.

Next I put one slice at a time in a plastic bag and I pounded it until it was an even thickness. Putting the chicken in a bag will prevent chicken juices from flying all over your kitchen. Repeat this step with the rest of the slices.

Then I combined the garlic powder, onion powder, salt and black pepper. I seasoned both sides of all the chicken slices.

Crack the eggs into a bowl and beat until well combined. Then put the crackers in a new plastic bag and crush them until they are very fine almost powder like. I used a rolling pin to do this.

One at a time dip the chicken slices in the egg mixture then put in the bag and shake until covered with the cracker crumbs. Repeat this step with each of the chicken slices.

Now it’s time to fry the breaded chicken. Heat up the canola oil in a skillet over medium high heat.

Once the oil is hot add two slices of the chicken. Let them cook for two minutes.

Then flip the chicken over and cook for another 2 minutes. Once the chicken is done transfer it to a paper towel lined plate to drain.

Repeat this process with the remaining slices of chicken adding more oil to the skillet as needed.
