Key ingredients
- Pecans – Pecan halves or chopped pecans are fine to use.
- Evaporated milk – Adds a touch of creaminess to the horchata.
- Sweetened condensed milk – For adding sweetness but could be swapped for the sweetener of your preference.
- Vanilla extract and ground cinnamon– Add additional subtle flavor.
How to make agua de nuez
Toast the pecans in a pan over medium heat for about 5 minutes. Make sure to stir frequently to prevent them from burning. Then cover with water and bring to a boil.
Next remove the skillet from heat and cover. Let the pecans soak for 1 hour.
In a pitcher combine the evaporated milk and the sweetened condensed milk. Then transfer the soaked pecans and the soaking water to a blender.
Blend for 1 minute then strain the mixture into the pitcher using a fine mesh strainer.
Next add the rest of the water, ground cinnamon and vanilla extract. Stir well. Serve the agua de nuez over ice.
What are the different types of horchata?
There’s the traditional horchata of course, which is rice based and can sometimes include almonds. There’s also strawberry horchata which is as you can imagine, a blend of strawberries and rice. Oat horchata also known as oatchata or agua de avena is another version.
Variations
Some like to swap out the evaporated milk for coconut milk. This variation called agua fresca de coco y nuez (coconut and pecan agua fresca) is also incredibly delicious.
However you choose to make pecan horchata it is sure to be delicious!
How long does pecan horchata last in the refrigerator?
Pecan horchata will stay good for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. However it’s so yummy it will most likely be gone very quickly!
