Hi everybody! Today I’m going to show you how to make salsa verde. If you love cooking Mexican food like me then you HAVE to know how to make salsa verde. It’s such an important part of Mexican cuisine. This authentic recipe for salsa verde is very easy and is ready in less than 20 minutes! You can use it on all your favorite Mexican foods!

My favorite meal to eat with salsa verde are the gorditas that I posted about awhile ago. This recipe makes about 3 cups of salsa. If you want to make this salsa to go with the gorditas then you may want to halve the recipe for the salsa or you will probably end up with too much.

This is not a salsa that will last a long time in the fridge. It has avocado in it so it will turn brown if you don’t eat it within 24 hours. Jaime (my husband) and I have no problem eating it all up way before it has a chance to even think about turning brown!

You can use this salsa for some delicious and spicy chilaquiles verdes just omit the avocado!

I also wanted to let you know that you can adjust the spiciness according to your liking. The recipe I’m sharing with you today is very spicy. If you want it less spicy then use less serrano peppers.

You could also make this salsa with jalapeños if you can’t find serrano peppers. Depending on how big the jalapenos are one may be enough.

You don’t have to add the avocado if you don’t want but it gives the salsa a creamier consistency. But I will say that you should add the avocado if you’re going to be eating this salsa with the gorditas. The avocado makes the salsa not as runny so it will stay inside the gorditas better.

Just looking at these photos leaves me craving more! Some chicken enchiladas with salsa verde sounds amazing doesn’t it? I will definitely have to make that soon!

Salsa verde goes perfectly with tacos, tamales, enchiladas and many of your other favorite Mexican meals!

Ingredients

  • 7 tomatillos
  • 3 serrano peppers
  • 1/2 small white onion
  • 1 large garlic clove
  • 1 avocado
  • 1/2 bunch cilantro
  • juice of 1/4 of lime or to taste
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  1. In a pot cover the tomatillos and serrano peppers with water bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat to medium low and simmer for about 10 minutes or until tomatillos are softened.
  3. Transfer tomatillos and serrano peppers to blender.
  4. Add onion, garlic, avocado and cilantro to blender.
  5. Blend for about a minute or until the salsa is well blended.
  6. Transfer to a bowl and season with salt and lime juice to taste.
  7. Stir and serve.
  8. Enjoy! Refrigerate any leftover salsa
