Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus Tea)

Agua de jamaica also known as “hibiscus tea” is a popular agua fresca that’s perfect for the summer. Not only is agua de jamaica super refreshing and delicious it’s also very beautiful. Just look at that color! Luckily this drink is very easy to make so I hope you’ll give it a try!

All you need to make this yummy drink are dried hibiscus flowers, water and sugar. It’s so simple! The amount of sugar you add is totally up to you. My husband likes his with very little sugar but I prefer to add more to mine. The good thing is this recipe can be adapted to your preference.

Hibiscus tea has a tart taste. It reminds me a lot of cranberry juice! So if you like cranberry juice I think you’ll love this recipe!

Agua de Jamaica

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers
  • 8 cups water
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Put the dried hibiscus flowers and 4 cups of water in a pot. Bring to a boil. Let it boil for 3 minutes. Then remove the pot from heat.

  2. Add the sugar to the pot and stir. Cover and let the mixture cool for 2 hours.

  3. Strain the liquid into a pitcher using a mesh strainer. Push on the flowers with the back of a spoon to get all of the liquid. Discard the flowers.

  4. Add 4 more cups of water to the pitcher and stir.

  5. Serve over ice and enjoy!
