Agua de Nuez (Pecan horchata)

Agua de nuez is a delicious Mexican beverage made with pecans.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup pecan pieces
  • 12 oz can of evaporated milk
  • 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tbs Mexican vanilla blend
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 8 cups water

Instructions

  1. Toast the pecans in a pan over medium heat for about 5 minutes. Make sure to stir frequently.

  2. Cover the pecans with 4 cups of water and bring to a boil.

  3. Remove the pan from heat and cover. Let soak for 1 hour.

  4. In a pitcher combine the evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk.

  5. Transfer the soaked pecans and the soaking water to a blender. Blend for 1 minute.

  6. Strain the mixture into the pitcher using a fine mesh strainer.

  7. Add the remaining 4 cups of water to the pitcher along with the vanilla and cinnamon. Stir well.

  8. Serve over ice and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

  • Make sure to stir the pecans frequently while toasting to prevent them from burning.
  • Swap out the evaporated milk for coconut milk to make agua de coco y nuez.
