Drunken Beans (Frijoles Borrachos)

Drunken beans (frijoles borrachos) get their name because they are made with beer! If you’re someone like me who absolutely hates beer you may be reluctant to try them. However this is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever eaten. Seriously they’re that good!

Frijoles Borrachos or drunken beans are a delicious simple mexican meal made with beer!

I love simple meals like this. These beans can be eaten as is like a soup or they can be served over white rice or even Mexican rice.

They are also great served as a side to the main meal such as tamales, enchiladas or quesadillas.

I recently made them for a group of friends and they ate them with some good sliced french bread with butter. And oh my gosh that was also amazing!

How to Make Drunken Beans (Frijoles Borrachos)

First step is to bring the beans to a boil and then simmer until done. Mine only took about 2 hours.

simmering beans

Once beans are softened add a can of fire roasted diced tomatoes and continue to simmer on low

Now add 12 oz of a Mexican beer such as modelo to the pot. Continue to simmer for about 20 min.

Next fry up a pound of bacon. I actually baked mine. It’s so much easier and not as messy.

After bacon is done break it up into pieces. Reserve about 2 tablespoons of the bacon grease.

Now in a skillet saute the jalapeños, onion and garlic in the bacon grease until softened. Season with salt and pepper.

Now add a few cup of the beans to the skillet along with some of the broth and mash.

mashing the beans

After mashing the beans well return them to the pot with the rest of the beans. Add the pieces of bacon and chopped cilantro to the pot and stir well.

I really like the consistency that mashing some of the beans gives. It just thickens it up a bit.

If you haven’t yet tried drunken beans then you need to ASAP. You will not regret it

They are one of my favorite things to eat especially now that it’s getting chilly. This will warm you up right away.

While I highly highly recommend that you try it with the beer as it’s phenomenal! You can leave it out if you want and then you can call them charro beans. Charro beans are the same as drunken beans but without the beer.

I truly hope you enjoyed today’s recipe. I will be back soon. Thanks for visiting, bye! 🙂

I made sure the seeds were removed from the jalapenos because we don't like things too spicy. Soup was amazing.
