Atole de Vainilla (Vanilla Atole)

If you like champurrado you’ll love this atole de vainilla. This vanilla atole is a simple yet incredibly delicious, warming and filling drink that I’m positive you will love. It’s the perfect drink for the cold winter nights.

This vanilla atole is made using masa harina. I use the Maseca brand. You’ll want to make sure you get the kind that says it’s for tortillas and not the tamales one.

Atole can also be made with corn starch which is an even quicker way to make atole than using masa harina.

Atole is great with breakfast to warm you up. It is commonly eaten with tamales during the holidays. I like to drink it in the evenings as a dessert when I can finally relax and actually savor it. If you’re like me and your favorite flavor of ice cream is vanilla then you will probably like this recipe better than champurrado.

What you will need

  • Masa harina
  • Water
  • Milk
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Brown sugar
  • Vanilla extract

How to make atole de vainilla

Pour the masa harina into a pot and slowly stir in the water until there are no lumps.

Turn on the heat to medium high and add the cinnamon stick and milk to the pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer then add the brown sugar to the pot and stir.

Reduce heat to medium and continue to simmer for about 8 minutes stirring often to prevent burning. Remove the pot from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

By now you should have a smooth mixture that has thickened.

The atole will be very hot so let it cool a little before serving. I like to leave the cinnamon stick in the pot so it can infuse the atole with more flavor.

Atole de vainilla is a delicious hot Mexican beverage that is popular throughout the holidays. You must try it!

If you haven’t had vanilla atole I highly suggest you make it, I know you will love it. This would also be a big hit at a gathering. But make sure you double the recipe if you’re feeding a large group. If you don’t finish it all you can always save the leftover atole in the refrigerator and heat it up the next day.

In fact I make this almost every night and I always save a mug full of it so my husband can drink it at work.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I've never used pinole before so I really can't say. If you try it let us know how it turns out.
